In the cinematographic version going back to 1978, Clark Kent, disturbed by the death of his/her adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, embarks in a long spiritual search which carries out it far in north. Arrived at the end of its voyage, where the dry land left its place to icy water of the Arctique, it leaves its bag a green crystal which, since strong a long time, called it with him, and launches it to far. Under its eyes ébaillis, the crystal explodes, multiplies and divides for, finally to give rise to a crystal fortress which is lost in the icy landscape. By exploring it, Clark discovers what it would be necessary to call " a panel of contrôle". Hesitating, it activates it, thus starting a message preregistered by his biological father: Jor' El. This one indicates the place designed by the crystal of " Fortress of Solitude". This name remained to him. It is also at this time that Jor' El learns the true destiny with Kal' El, his/her only son.
In the Smallville television series, the fortress seems to be created by Jor' El for his/her son.
