Form (martial art)

A form indicates in the Martial arts a sequence of combat realized in the vacuum, with or without weapons, whose unfolding reproduces a diagram of combat predetermined against one or more imaginary adversaries. The gestural sequence carried out in solo can be also interpreted with a partner.

One distinguishes:

  • a form ancestralle: its composition is generally very old and is conveyed from generation to generation. One finds them in many traditional arts of combat of type bando, Karaté, Taekwondo, Kung-fu, etc
  • a modern form: its composition is recent or etalie for a type of precise service. One finds them in artistic Karaté (Musical forms), in aéro-kick, etc

Categories of martial forms

One classifies usually the practices in two radically distinct categories, in particular in matiaux arts of the South-East Asia (Burmese Martial arts in particular) and in the Chinese Martial arts:

  • the external formats centered in first on the Self-defense and the sporting event (the system " dur")
  • the internal formats centered on the development says energy and strictly personnel. Some practical also lead to the competition of martial forms ditent " molles" or " douces" (the system " mou" or " doux").
