Fontvieille

Fontvieille ( Makes-Vièio in Occitan Provençal according to the Norme mistralienne and Fònt-Vièlha according to the traditional Norme) is a common French, located in the department of the Rhone delta and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. Its inhabitants is called Fontvieillois.

Places and monuments

  • the mill Saint-Pierre (or Mill Ribet ), known as mill of Alphonse Daudet , on a height surrounding the village. This Mill, built in 1814, is the the most known Windmill of Fontvieille. It is also one of the last to have ceased turning, in 1915. Contrary to the local legend, Daudet it forever inhabited, even if he wrote on this building: “A ruin this mill; collapsing remains of stones and old boards, which one had not put at the wind since years and which lay, useless like a poet, whereas around on the coast flour-milling thrived and transfered with all wings. ”. Beside this mill a small museum in homage to the writer of Provence was. On the same hill one can see other mills which belong to the group of the mills of Rome (Sourdon mill, Ramet mill, Tissot-Avon mill), from which the first was built in 1791.
  • the castle Montauban , where Daudet lived the last years of its life, is with nearly one kilometer of the mill Daudet, and belonged to the " Daudet" course; , tourist walk which touches also the four mills and the small museum.

Personalities related to the commune

The famous author of the Letters of my mill , Alphonse Daudet, passed the end of his life in the village of Provence. The writer of Tartarin de Tarascon and of the goat of Mr Seguin remained with the castle of Montauban, and even gave his name to a mill, where the legend says that it was collected to write his news.

The painter Léo Lelée also lived in Fontvielle, one can visit a permanent exposure in the old village.

The journalist Yvan Audouard was native of Fontvieille. The new elementary school will bear its name.
