Folketing
The Folketing , or Folketinget , is the name of the national Parlement of the Denmark. That wants to about say “the assembly of the people”. Good translation, but it is not a translation, would be the “Ting” of the people.
History
Of 1849 until in 1953, Folketing was one of the rooms of the bicameral Parliament, the Rigsdag (royal Parliament). The other room was the Landsting . The two rooms had the same prerogatives, also one cannot speak not about Upper House and Lower House. The two rooms represented parts different from the population: Folketing rather represented independent farmers, tradesmen or the educated classes, Landsting rather representing the old aristocracy and the conservatives.
In 1953, a news Constitution was adopted. Landsting was removed and a Parliament unicaméral, Folketing, was founded.
Since 1849, Folketing is located in the Palais of Christianborg, in the middle of Copenhagen.
