Focşani
Focşani is a municipality of the east of the Romania, chief town of the Judeţ de Vrancea. The population is of 103.219 inhabitants. The city is located at 174 km in the North-East of the capital Bucharest, near the Moldavie.
Called “the city on the river Milcov”, Focsani, is regarded as being the first capital of the plain principalities of Moldavie and Valachie. Indeed, the January 24th 1859, the first institutions of the new State started to function and on their base was going to be born the State National Unit Rumanian, following the Great Union of 1918. The Milcov river, passing by the city, was used as border between Moldavie and Valachie until 1859, when the two Rumanian principalities were linked. The Moldavian part of the city is older and larger.
The first " congress of all the unions Sioniste S of Romania for the colonization of Eretz Israel took place with Focsani the December 30th 1881. This congress, the first in its kind, took place 16 years before the first Congress of the world Organization Zionist organized with Basle in 1897 and had a great influence on the Jews of Romania.
