Flying Blue
Flying Blue is the programme of development of consumer loyalty of the Groupe Air France-KLM which was launched the June 6th 2005 and which replaces Fréquence More (Air France) and Flying Dutchman (KLM) as from the same date. Since September 1st 2007, this program relates to also Air Europa and Kenya Airways, become associated with SkyTeam at the same date.
This program represents an investment of at least 15 M€ and also a shortfall, on the Turnover of the group of 114 M€ (since it is a question of allotting free tickets to the fidélisés customers, the cumulated debts of Air France (80 M€) and of KLM (34 M€) at March 31st, 2004 already reached this amount).
It gathers some 10 million users of the two programs which will preserve all the Miles accumulated before June 6th, 2005. These Mile S could be obtained or proposed on 18.000 not-air flights, 900 destinations or 70 partners.
These Miles are of two kinds:
- the Mile-Premium which it is possible to accumulate each time a passenger member of the program travels on a company member of SkyTeam or on another company partner - these Miles can be exchanged then against tickets precedes valid near Air France or of KLM (or other air or not-air partners);
- the Mile-Statute, are accumulated in addition to the Mile-Premium, each time the voyage is accomplished on a company member of SkyTeam.
Its name was selected in September 2004 at the end of a process which lasted nearly one year. After an agreement on the common values that Air France and KLM wished above all to communicate:
- proximity with their customers;
- opening to the various cultures;
- modernity.
It was necessary moreover, a name easy to pronounce, comprehensible throughout the world, ascribable to Air France and KLM and of course available.
Tests were thus carried out near customers French, British, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, members of the programs of fidelity Fréquence More and Flying Dutchman, in order to consolidate these values and the first tracks of research. Complementary investigations were made in Asia near experts having a local sensitivity.
500 possible names were then proposed then filtered by the team chargeds of this project in the two companies. They were then tested throughout the world on the linguistic and legal levels, the mark having to be deposited in nearly 120 countries.
Le strategic committee of management (SMC) of the Group Air France-KLM met on several occasions throughout the step, and carried its final choice on Flying Blue for the following reasons: Flying Blue was appreciated unanimously in the countries where it was presented; it connotes values related on air and the positioning of the product, such as freedom, opening and energy. Lastly, the choice of this name English illustrates the international dimension of Air France and KLM.
The communication near the customers will be done in six languages, of which French for the French-speaking members.
The chart Flying Blue is declined in four levels:
- Flying Blue Ivory ;
- Flying Blue Silver from 30.000 Mile-Statute for the members having their address in Metropolitan France, 25.000 if not;
- Flying Blue Gold from 60.000 Mile-Statute (respectively 40.000);
- Flying Blue Platinum from 90.000 Mile-Statute (respectively 70.000).
There exists also a chart " Club 2000 " who is not a discount card but a chart of " club". It is granted by Air France only on discrétionnaires criteria to VIP, decision makers economic, etc
A ticket precedes (one-way ticket) can be acquired as of 10.000 Mile-Premium.
The Mile-Premium can be acquired on the following companies (in addition to the SkyTeam companies which are Aeroflot, Aeroméxico, Air France, Alitalia, Continental Airlines, SCUMS Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Kenya Airways, KLM, Korean Air and Northwest Airlines):
- Air has! PS;
- Air Europa;
- Aircalin ;
- Airlinair ;
- Alaska/Horizon;
- Bangkok Airways;
- CCM Airlines ;
- Clouded Southern Airlines;
- Comair Limited ;
- Cityjet ;
- GlobalPass ;

- Ukraine International.
It is enough to travel at least once every three years with SkyTeam to prolong the validity of the Miles indefinitely.
