Flaman
The Flaman is a indicator-recorder of Speed which was very much used on the Locomotive S of the SNCF.
Name of its creator, Eugene Flaman (1842-1935), engineer of the Company of the East of 1866 to 1908, this apparatus was in service on the majority of the Locomotive S of 1900 with 1990. It was familiarly called “the informer”.
It is equipped with a dial graduated in kilometers per hour as of a recording device which consists of several stylets with ink and a band of Papier pulled by a mechanism with spring. A red, positionable needle to the hand, can provide speed not to be exceeded. A small dial, graduated into 10 mn, indicates the operation life. The apparatus, in Bronze, is positioned vis-a-vis the driver and its cap is sealed by a lead.
In theory, on the tape which ravels at controlled speed, are traced:
- the speed realized over one period of a few seconds,
- the repetition of the open and closed signals,
- a dotted line confirming the action on the device of day before ancestor of VACMA,
- a curve of time in tooth of saw, a tooth corresponding to 10 mn.
Obtaining information is done by average mechanics such as for example a flexible device pulled by spur gearing since one of the axles of the engine.
This type of recorder was also used by foreign networks: the English Mallard of LNER was equipped with it at the time of its speed records in 1938. The manufacture of the apparatus during was entrusted very a long time to the Vaucanson Workshops of Saint-Nicolas-in Aliermont.
Other models
Before Flaman the railroad companies were concerned control a posteriori speeds of the convoys: the network of Alsace-Lorraine used very early the recorder Hausshaelter . But its time of integration speed (12 seconds) appeared too long. The first Teloc builds by the Swiss firm Hassler is rather powerful and light but expensive with the purchase and the beginning, PLM uses it only on its new electric park. RBM (Renaud-Bognart-Maujart) is a tachograph resulting from the automobile world and will be employed only on rail-cars.
It is as from 1960, that lighter apparatuses are installed on the new materials: a new version of the Téloc , then the Tachro provided by Jaeger .
