Fenice

Fenice (in Italian: the Phoenix of the Greek Mythologie which reappears of its Cendre S) is a opera of Venice of the XVIIIe neo-classic century of style decoration Rococo. It is with the Scala of Milan and the Teatro di San Carlo of Naples one of the three most prestigious temples of the opera Italy N. As its name indicates it, it has ressuscity three times of its ashes following the fires of 1773, 1846 and 1996.

History

In 1789 the theater San Benedetto of the district of San Marco of Venice burns and the nobility of the city decides to make build new: “Fenice” (the Phoenix of the Greek Mythologie which reappears of its ashes) by the Architecte Gian Antonio Selva. It is inaugurated the May 16th 1792 with an opera and a ballet “I giochi di Agrigento” (plays of Agrigente) of Giovanni Paisiello.

This high-place of the Italian culture and European acquires a great fame and present operas, Play, Ballet S and concerts of Classical music, with in particular creations of some of most beautiful the operas of Verdi, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti…

In 1832 the theater is destroyed by the flames and is rebuilt with identical in 1836 by the architects Giambattista and Tommaso Meduna and is decorated by Tranquillo Orsi what confirms its name of “Fenice” (Phoenix). Dice 1844 Giuseppe Verdi creates Hernani there followed Attila, Rigoletto, Traviata and Simon Boccanegra.

After war, Fenice ensures its dominating place in the Italian opera and accommodates modern works of Stravinsky, Britten, Prokofiev…

In 1996 whereas the theater is one of the world references of the lyric Tragédie, it is again destroyed the January 29th by a case of arson. The town of Venice, helped by the Italian state, UNESCO and important donations of the whole world make for the third time reappear the theater of its ashes to identical of its luxury of origin after 8 years of work and 60 € million. It is inaugurated the November 12th 2003 by representations of Traviata of Giuseppe Verdi put in scene by Robert Carsen.
