Felipe Poey

Felipe Poey Aloy is a cuban zoologist there, born the May 26th 1799 with Havana and dead the January 28th 1891.

Biography

His/her parents are French and Spanish and spends several years (of 1804 with 1807) to Pau. It makes studies of right to Madrid. He becomes lawyer in Spain but must leave the country because of his liberal ideas and turns over to Cuba in 1823. He then starts to be interested in the Natural history and travels in France in 1825 with his wife. During its stay, it improves its knowledge of the Latin and starts to publish its preliminary research on the cuban butterflies. It takes part in the foundation, in 1832, of the entomological Société of France. It also starts to study the Poisson S. Later, after its return to Cuba, it will forward of the specimens of local fauna to Georges Cuvier and Achille Valencian.

Poey goes back to Cuba in 1833 when it founds the Natural history museum in 1839. In 1842, he becomes the first professor of Zoologie and Comparative anatomy of the university of Havana.

It also takes part in the creation of the Academy of Science natural, physical and medical of Havana and he is president of the anthropological Company.

Philately

Cuba commemorated this naturalist by a series of nine stamps published in 1958 and representing its portrait, one of its works and seven cuban species of lépidoptères described by its care. This same country celebrated the 175e birthday of its birth by the emission of a series of six stamps and of a block in 1974 breaks into leaf, as well as the 200e birthday of its birth by the emission of a series of four illustrated stamps of Poisson S in 1999.
