Faxaflói

Faxaflói is rather a bay that a fjord. It is located in the south-east of the Iceland, the capital Reykjavík being in edge. When the weather is nice, one can see from there until the Volcan Snæfellsjökull on the peninsula of Snæfellsnes is a distance of about 120 km.

Faxafói always contributed has to nourish the local population. Formerly, one used small boats to fish close to the coast - when the colonizing Danish allowed it. Today, of course, Iceland independent and is motorized.

In the north-eastern part of Faxaflói, in the Kollafjörður , the small island of Videy is. She is not inhabited any more since 1943, but one can see the traces of the old dwellings (oldest dating from the 10th century). At the 12th century, one built a church there, and in 1225 a Monastère which will perdura until the Réforme, at the end of the 16th century. In summer, one can take a ferry to go there since Reykjavík.
