Faure Gnassingbé

Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé is a politician Togo alluvium, one of the many sons of the former dictator Gnassingbé Eyadéma, who was in his turn president of the Togo of the February 6th to the February 25th 2005 and again since the May 4th 2005.

Biography

Born the June 6th 1966 with Afagnan, South-east, Faure Gnassingbé would have in particular studied the economy and management with the Université Paris-Dauphine and would have obtained a MBA with the University George Washington in the USA (control in administration of the businesses). It manages the colossal fortune of his father the dictator Etienne Eyadema.

He was appointed within the Togolese Parliament for the district of BLITTA under the label of the old sole party Rassemblement of the Togolese people ( RPT ), then co-opted public Minister for Labor, Mines and Telecommunications of the government of Kofi Sama the 29 July 2003.

Following the death of his/her father which has occurred the February 5th 2005 and of a constitutional Coup d'etat supported by the army and a militia dirigee by his/her brother Kpatcha, it was named president. Under the pressure of the opposition, African Union and international community, Faure Gnassingbé initially gives up being a president until the term of the normal mandate of his/her father and announces elections in the 60 days. Then it gives up the modification of the constitution voted in all haste the shortly after died of his father for évincer the temporary president. Lastly, the February 25th, it gives up its mandate of president per interim and stands as a candidate to the presidential elections. Constitutional legality is almost restored. The president of the National Assembly évincé, a long time blocked by the Togolese army at the border Benign oise, not having been able despite everything as envisaged to recover its station by the constitution.

He is declared thereafter elected at the time of a disputed election the April 24th with 60,6% of the voices. The opposition highly denounced the irregularity of these elections and of the confrontations between partisans of the opposition and police force and militia of the RPT (party in power with the support of the army) took place in the political capital of the country. They would have involved 800 died among the opponents, according to the Togolese league of the human rights and the investigators of UNO. The France, by the voice of its Foreign Minister, was declared satisfied with the presidential election. The May 3rd, the Constitutional court confirms the results of the election.

A foreseeable nomination

Its nomination as a president was already envisaged, because of the bad health condition of his/her father. In December 2002, Gnassingbé Eyadéma had made amend the constitution of the country in order to lower the age necessary to be a president from 45 to 35 years, that is to say the age which his/her son had at that time.
