Family of Clisson
The family of Clisson was, with those of the Rohan and the Laval, most powerful with the Duché of Brittany.
Presentation
It starts to appear in the history in 1040 with Galdinus (Gaudin) and Guy of “Clichon” (probably of Germanic origin). Then are mentioned Bernard (in 1075), Guillaume (in 1180) and Aimery (in 1200).Guillaume de Clisson (also called Guillaume the Young person), attested in 1217, is the founder of the Château of Clisson. In a Charter, a lord of Clisson and his son are even mentioned as being present at the Bataille of Bouvines in 1214. Already at that time, the family had on the escarpés edges of the Nantes Sèvre, with Clisson, a castle which, a few years later, was replaced by this fortress which one admires the imposing ruins still today.
To have supposedly plotted with the king of England, Olivier IV of Clisson, lord of Belleville and Châteaumur are decapitated with Paris on August 2nd 1343, on order of the king Philippe VI of Valois.
At the beginning of the War One hundred Year old, the family of Clisson is allied with the Duc of Brittany, Jean IV of Brittany, and with the English.
Olivier V of Clisson (1336 - 1407) becomes Connétable of France of the king Charles VI, in 1380 in succession of Of Guesclin. With its death the castle is transmitted to his/her daughter Marguerite de Clisson who covets the title of duchess of Brittany by her marriage with the count de Penthièvre, Jean of Blois, wire of the duke baillistre of Brittany, Charles of Blois. By the marriage of Marguerite, Clisson passes between the hands of the dukes of Brittany.
The duke François II of Brittany is born with the castle in 1435. His/her daughter Anne becomes duchess of Brittany and queen of France.
The castle
The Château of Clisson was formerly the seat of powerful a Châtellenie covering 23 parishes. The monks were very influential: the Templier S, Benedictine S, Cordeliers found in Clisson of powerful brotherhoods around the castle and its lords. 5 principal parishes are counted: the Madeleine, Saint-Gilles, Saint-Jacob, Notre-Dame and Trinité
