Falls of Kalambo
The falls of Kalambo , in English Kalambo Falls , are falls of water height a 235 m, located at the border between the Zambia and the Tanzania, at the south-eastern end of the Lac Tanganyika. They are the highest uninterrupted falls of Africa, after the Tugela Falls in South Africa.
Archeological site
The falls gave their name to the one of the most important archeological sites of Africa, Kalambo Falls . It delivered a sequence covering more than 250.000 years. He was excavated as from 1953 by John Desmond Clark, which discovered archaeological vestiges around a small lake behind the falls.A lithic Industry of the higher Acheuléen, hearths and objects preserved well out of organic matter were put there at the day. The latter include a Gourdin out of wood, sticks to excavate and evidence of the fruit consumption.
Posterior industries Sangoen born and Lupembien born, related with those known with the Congo, were also discovered. Approximately 10.000 years ago, the site was occupied by the carriers of the culture Magosien, which did not yield the place in their turn with the carriers of the culture Wilton. Lastly, roughly at the 4th century, of the groups Bantous more industrialized started to be established and cultivate the surroundings.
The site was registered with the world heritage of UNESCO.
Fauna
The falls of Kalambo are also known for their colony of Marabout of Africa.
