Fabian hurricane

The hurricane Fabian was a Ouragan capverdien which was formed the August 25th. It moved towards the west-north-west and reached winds of 230  km/h and a pressure of 939 hPa, is category 4, on September 1st. It turned then towards the North-West. The September 5th, Fabian struck the Bermuda as an hurricane force 3. The wall of the eye of the hurricane passed directly on the island and caused major damage without the eye itself not touching ground. When it passed above the south-eastern sector of the Grands Benches of Newfoundland, Fabian was an hurricane force 1 with winds of 130 km/h but became a Cyclone extratropical the September 8th.

Fabian responsible for eight had died and because of the damage estimated at 300 $US million (of 2003) in Bermuda. It was the most important hurricane since the season 1963 and the worst than this country knew since 1926.

Weather situation

The August 25th, a tropical Wave émerga off the African coast . This system passed on the Îles of Cape Verde a little later the 26 whereas the convection decreased but early the 27 the convection and its organization intensified so that in end-of-day, the wave had become the Tropical depression Ten . The latter was at 675  km in the west of the Islands of Cape Verde, above a very hot sea and in a atmospheric Circulation with weak a shearing of the winds in altitude. because of these favorable conditions, the depression became the Tropical storm Fabian the August 28th.

The bands of convections and their faces of gusts continued their intensification around Fabian to form a well defined circle and the August 30th, the system became the hurricane Fabian . This last slows down its progression towards the west-north-west. Its fast development enabled him to reach the status later major hurricane this day. At this time, the major convection close to the eye was degraded and Fabian marked a pause of its intensification but it took again the same day when the eye became again well defined and round inside its circle of convection. The face of gusts continued to extend around the hurricane and Fabian reached Category 4 of the scale of Saffir-Simpson in end-of-day on August 31st. The storms close to the wall of the eye became more intense and their top much colder. At the same time, the external face of gust became more symmetrical. These two indices being characteristic of a tropical cyclone in intensification. Fabian reached its maximum intensity on September 1st, with winds of 230  km/h, with 555  km in the east of the northern part of the Lesser Antilles.

Fabian remained with the same intensity during twelve hours then started to weaken during internal fluctuations. It turned to the North-West the September 2nd thanks to a weakening of the anticyclonic peak subtropical due to collar in higher atmospheric circulation. After being remained of category 3 certain times, Fabian réintensifia temporarily on September 4th with category 4. While carrying on its way towards Bermuda, it accelerated but lost of its intensity to the approach of a barometric Creux of altitude at the time of its passage to 23  km in the west of Bermuda on September 5th. It then had winds of 180 km/h what always classified it in category 3. The September 8th, with 1095  km in the North-East of Cape Race (Newfoundland, Canada), Fabian became a Cyclone extratropical (depression of the average latitudes) having lost its major convection close to its center. The resulting depression turned towards north the September 9th and amalgamated with a depressionary system between the southern point of the Greenland and the Iceland the 10. The weather service of Bermuda mentioned in its bulletins that Fabian would give winds and strong rains but not yet of force of hurricane. However, the following bulletins revised the trajectory of the cyclone gradually. Consequently the lines at the service stations, banks and supermarkets were long, . All the governmental offices, the schools and the majority of the trade closed their doors the arrival day before of Fabian.

All the flights, towards and from Bermuda, were cancelled and several cruising ships left earlier to take refuge with the broad one

The insurance companies noted a push of calls for renewal of police forces or signatures of news. However, any purchase of new font for ship had already been suspended several days before the arrival of Fabian.

Impact

The Caribbean

Fabian caused a wave of storm which broke on Antigua and Barbuda, causing light damage with certain boats. The waves and the high tide also caused erosion of the beaches of the northern coast of Puerto Rico as well as damage estimated at 30  000 $US of 2003 on the site of construction of Park Ocean. Finally, in Dominican Republic, waves of 2,4  meters and the winds kept the ships in the ports and several families of Nagua were evacuated. On the whole, the damage of all kinds rose to approximately 300 million $US (2003).

Large waves broke during days before the arrival of Fabian on the southern part of the islands, causing dangerous currents which carried two swimmers. The latter were helped and the authorities emitted a prohibition of bathe immediately. The waves reached of 7 with 10  meters at the time of the passage of the hurricane and caused a strong coastal erosion, especially those of the south. The owner of a boat which broke its mooring ropes with Spanish Point, tried with two other people to save it. After having faced waves of 6  meters, which tossed the ship like a wisp of straw, they arrived healthy and safe at Hamilton Harbor . A coastal wall in this last port collapsed and disturbed the sea traffic. The roadway site of the four dead ones was largely damaged by the waves and the winds.

The winds also damaged several patrimonial buildings like the House off Assembly (seat of the government), the Town hall of Hamilton and the former district-general of the armed forces. The tracks did not suffer however and the air traffic took again the shortly after the passage of Fabian in order to receive flights of assistance. The commercial flights took again three days later in order to leave time to make safe the terminal strongly damaged by the winds and the flood of one meter sea water.

Tourism industry was struck with five major hotels which had to remain closed during enough a long period for repairs, another which could offer only one quarter of its rooms during work and the golf courses undergoing of the damage to their trees and the buildings. The damage with the flora and the fauna of the islands was important.

Elsewhere

Although after Bermuda, Fabian remained with broad, it nevertheless caused four additional fates. The swell produced by the hurricane gave dangerous currents and important waves along the east coast of the United States, especially in North Carolina. These favorable conditions with the Surf attracted several bathers and a man drowned close to the Cap Hatteras when it was involved towards the ocean.

One did not record data on the spot at the time of his passage in Canadian water, however the model of resonance billows of the Canadian Center of forecast of hurricane concluded with blades height of more than 20 meters in extreme cases of Canadian water in the area of fishing of the Grands Benches in south-east of Newfoundland. In the sector where the waves were strongest, the ship Pacific Attitude ran, making three died. The damage with the roads isolated certain communities, in particular the roadway between the parish of Saint-Georges and the island Saint-David (the Causeway ) which fur crossed serious damage. It was réouverte partially after three days with only one way but it must be waited until November so that repairs are supplemented. During work, the roadway was closed the night, at the time of strong rains or winds of more than 48  km/h.

Even after the rebuilding of the nests of petrels by volunteers, the government bermudien decided to transfer them in a sedentary site, that is to say the small island of Nonsuch Island , and two years after Fabian the number of birds was higher than before the storm.

Helps

XL Capital Ltd. , a finance company based in Bermuda, sent 250 large fabrics for tent, 10 Génératrice S and a great quantity of cords.
