The department was created with the French revolution, the March 4th 1790 pursuant to the law of the December 22nd 1789, starting from part of the province of the Berry.

Geography

Expensive with the Département of Indre the province of the Berry formed formerly. It forms today part of the Région Center and is bordering on the departments of the Indre, of Loir-et-Cher, the Loiret, the Nievre, Allier and of the Creuse.

Relief

Leant in the south with the first buttresses of Auvergne, in the east with the soft hills of the Sancerrois (434 m) broadsides by the course of the the Loire, the department opens in the west on the Champagne berrichonne and in the North-West on the flat solognote. Its culminating point is the Magnoux (504 m). The Cher while leaving the department is with the lowest altitude: 89 Mr.

A soft climate, a not very aggressive relief, water with profusion helped with a dispersion of the settlement which appears in very many villages or hamlets still generally inhabited nowadays.

There does not seem to be particular name to designate the inhabitants of Expensive, one calls them, in reference to the old province of Berry from which the department is resulting, Berrichons.
