Exilles ( Insilha in Occitan) is an Italian commune of the Province of Turin in the Piedmont. The mode fascite did not succeed in imposing the name of Essille which was supposed Italian being.
Geography
Exile is in the center of the valley of Suse.
History
Exile is known above all for its imposing fortress, whose origin is old since it goes back at least to the 12th century. Until 1713, it protected the entry from the French territory. Destroyed by the French in 1796, it was rebuilt between 1821 and 1829 and was altered in 1874.The Homme with the iron mask was prisoner with Exilles, under the guard of its appointed geôlier, Bénigne Dauvergne of Saint-March between 1681 and 1687.
The locality belonged until 1713 to the Écartons from Briançonnais. It is located in the Italian Dauphiné.
