Evansville

City of the state of Indiana, in the county of Vanderburghaux, with the the United States. According to the census of 2000, the agglomeration counts 121.582 inhabitants. It is bordered by the Ohio in the south and is in position of crossroads between the two oceans and the Gulf of Mexico and the Big lakes.

History

Evansville was founded in 1817; its name comes from Robert Morgan Evans (1783-1844), one of its founders and officer of William Henry Harrison during the war of 1812. The city receives a charter in 1847. The channel Wabash- Erié, finished in 1843, connects Evansville to Toledo and accelerates the growth of the agglomeration. It has the 3rd older stage of Baseball of the country (open in 1915). The city was populated by Irish and German immigrants.

Economy

Evansville was an industrial center a long time (Bois initially, then automobile, finally Chimie and Aluminum). The coal is always exploited to feed the powerplants of Indiana. In the years 1920, the city is the second production center of heavy trucks of the the United States. During the Second world war the barges were assembled which were used for the unloading combined in Normandy on June 6th, 1944. The first refrigerator for the general public was manufactured in Evansville in 1922. The manufacturers Toyota car came to settle in 1998. The face of the city changes in the years 2000: new buildings are built like that of New Old National Bank or that of the energy group Vedner.
