Eusèbe Pamphile de Césarée , in Greek old Εὐσέϐιος , in Latin Eusebius Pamphili (towards 265 - 339) is a bishop, a theologist and a historian of the Church of the beginning of the 4th century. He is not recognized as a Père of the Church but its historical writings have an major importance for three centuries of the Christian history.

Biography

Priest, then bishop with Césarée of Palestine (towards 313), Eusèbe added to his name that of his holy Master Pamphile, victim of the persecution of Dioclétien. He was a close relation of the emperor Constantin I {{er}} and tied bonds with several of the principal figures of the Arianisme, without one being able for as much counting it like arien strictly speaking. Theorist of the Christian Empire and the divine mission entrusted to Constantin, it held of the intermediate positions between the partisans of the Symbole of Nicée and the ariens, being opposed to the council of Tyr and the synod of Antioche with Athanase of Alexandria, in favor of a strict orthodoxy.

The historian

Eusèbe is the creator of the ecclesiastical Histoire ( Θεοφάνεια / Theopháneia , history of the Church). He works on an abundant documentation and, with the manner of the modern historians, includes in his work of the extracts of the documents which he used (for example, of the letters of Constantin). Its account is generally rational and precise. Nevertheless, it is not an objective historian: as it indicates it itself, it makes work of propaganda for Christianity and it omits certain information:

“But we will generally mention in this history only the events which can be useful initially for ourselves, then with the posterity. ” (VIII, 2,3)

Eusèbe as composed a Chronique , list gone back to events of Creation with 303, a Vie of Constantin (it was sometimes doubted as he was the author) very eulogistic and two Éloges of Constantin . It is thus a very important source (but, of course partial) on the reign of this emperor.

Several Christian authors of the 4th century and the following centuries translated into Latin and prolonged his work (Rufin d' Aquilée, for HE, Jerome de Stridon for the Chronicle), or continued it in Greek (Philostorge, Socrate the Scholastic, Sozomène, Théodoret).

The theologist

Eusèbe is the author of an abundant and important work in this field. Its principal work is entitled evangelic Préparation ( Εὐαγγελικῆς Ἀποδείξεως Προπαρασκευή ), which aims at proving the superiority of Christianity, on the philosophical level, compared to paganism.
