Europe - Democracy - Esperanto

Esperanto > Espérantiste S > Europe - Democracy - Esperanto ----

Europe Democracy Esperanto or EDE (initials of Europe Esperanto Democracy and Eŭropo Demokratio Esperanto in Esperanto), is a political movement which proposes in particular (but not only) the adoption of the Esperanto like common language of intercommunication by all the countries of the European Union in order to facilitate the direct communication between Europeans.

Objective

The main aim of this movement is to reinforce the democracy in the European Union, in particular by means of Esperanto. In making an official language with whole share of the European Union would facilitate the contacts between members of different countries and would allow the emergence of a real democracy on a European scale. This movement introduced candidates in all the districts of Metropolitan France and will try in the years which come from essaimer in other countries of Europe from here to the elections of 2009.

Debates on EDE

Those which are against political neutrality would like that EDE gives up political neutrality (see SAT). Others espérantophones on the contrary, want a neutrality political stronger and claim for this reason the dissolution of EDE, but EDE affirms to be placed above the debates by declaring that Esperanto is not a political idea but essential tools with the democracy to allow the political debate. There are also the esperantists who criticize EDE by affirming that Esperanto is an international language and that to adopt it using the European elections would be likely to block the diffusion of this language.

No determining study announces for the moment any “dimensions love”, neither within the movement esperantist himself, nor in the “public whole”.

European elections of 2004

In practice, this movement did not think of collecting a high number of voices but wanted to benefit from the elections to make known Esperanto with the general public and to try to propose an alternative to employment, not of a score of languages (what causes enormous costs of translation at the European institutions) but with the hegemony of the English language. For him, that insidiously creates in Europe two classes of citizens; the “ english native announcer ” and others.

In the facts, only the French branch of Europe Democracy Esperanto (EDE-France) could take part in the European elections of 2004 and presented lists in the seven French electoral constituencies of metropolis.

Taken by the deadlines, EDE-Germany could collect only 2500 signatures out of the 4000 necessary ones to introduce candidates. EDE-Belgium and EDE-Italy have to give up fault of means.

In France, EDE obtained 25  259 votes at the time of the poll of June 13rd, 2004, are approximately 0,15% of the votes cast. Today, EDE structure at the European level and fight for the equality of the citizens in the European Union.

European elections of 2009

Europe Démocratie Esperanto is currently organizing itself to take part in the European elections of 2009 in all the countries of the European Union.

For that the interested people can join the movement and take part in the debates and preliminary works by joining the lists of discussion of the movement.
