Escouloubre

Escouloubre is a common French, located in the department of the Aude and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Its inhabitants is called Escouloubrais.

Geography

The village of Escouloubre is one highest of the mountain audoise (960m). It is located at the borders of the Aude, with the limit of the Aude, the Ariège and the the Eastern Pyrenees. Belonging to the Canton of Axat, Escouloubre is to approximately 20 km of Axat, chief town of canton, to approximately 35 km of Quillan, a few 50 km of Limoux, the sub-prefecture and 80 km of Carcassonne, the prefecture.

Extent and forest, cattle-rearing area vast favourable with the excursions, hunting for wild boars and the gathering of mushrooms. Its sodic sulfurous warm water, with the anti-rheumatic properties, made the fame of its Thermal spa at the beginning of the century.

Church of the Invention-Saint-Etienne, of the XIXe century, classified Historic building and recently restored. The inhabitants of Escouloubre who never went to Rome claim that its plan is a counterpart of that of the Basilique Saint-Pierre. Do not believe them! The church, charming for a village of high mountain, would hold under the baldachin of Saint Pierre. It dates from XVIe century, date on which the village moved by amalgamating several hamlets ( Touneou , San Juan , Soumairac , Messadie ).
a white marble statue of the abbot of Esperonnat benefactor of the village which of 1854 to 1866, built the church and fertilized the country while making dig a channel to irrigate the fields around the village. The statue is not very expressive, the right abbot holds his Bréviaire of the left hand and the handle of its pickaxe of the right hand, resting iron with ground.
a Hairy cast iron blue, presenting its rifle Lebel and pressing with the foot the eagle of the Germanic Empire. Forty names are engraved in the marble the pedestal. He also recalls that this war was a terrible massacre. Two white marble plates bear the names of some men of the village died at the time of the Second world war. Two electric factories and their stoppings. Oldest is that of Carcanet, one of the first appeared in the area at the beginning of the XXe century, built by the Southernmost Société of Transport of Force , with its various pressure pipes bringing water since the Capcir and the dam Matemale. This water crosses then the mountain under Bousquet to be turbinate again in the factory of Gesse. The other factory is located beside Usson.
