Erwin Panofsky

Erwin Panofsky (the March 30th 1892 with Hanover, Germany - the March 14th 1968 with Princeton (New Jersey)) was a Historien of art and a Essayiste américano - German.

Biography

Erwin Panofsky studied at the university of Freiburg, Berlin and Munich. In 1914, its thesis of doctorate on the theory of art at Dürer is accepted by the university of Freiburg. Its contributions

He was most eminent representing Iconographie, method of study of the history of art created by Warburg and his disciples, in particular Fritz Saxl, with the Institut Warburg of Hamburg. A personal and professional friendship bound it to Fritz Saxl with which it coecrivit majority of its work. It gave a short and precise description of its method in its famous article Iconographie and Iconologie .

In the Prospect like form symbolic system , it presents two things:

  1. the theory which the prospect for the Rebirth is based on a philosophy of the space which is itself interdependent of a philosophy of the relation between the subject and the world.
  2. many small studies of a particular point of the prospects which preceded, of the Roman epoch to the Middle Ages, and which are interesting in oneself in connection with the simple engineering problems or mathematics.

E. Panofsky distinguishes in the imago pietatis: the image of devotion, the historical image in scenic matter and the image of representation in hieratic or pertaining to worship matter. ¹
