Erosion of the littoral

The erosion of the littoral is a phenomenon which occurs in many places of the world: the light rise of the oceans results in a retreat of the littoral not compensated by the local fattening.

The mobility of the Dune S, the Estuary S and the feature of east coast natural, resulting from the combined action of the Vague S, of the Wind, the running S. It is more important on the soft substrates (Sable) and it is possible that the cleaning of the beaches by destroying the leashes of sea which were used as food with the micro-organisms living in sand contribute to it, just as the Climate warming by increasing the level of water and the force of the climatic risks.

They are surout harbor installations and the Digue S which have spectacular effects, by the modifications of the currents which they induce. The underwater Gravière S can also have differed effects.

The works of protection were themselves able to modify the currents and to dig the beach or the mudholes downstream.

The destruction of the Mangrove S is one of the independent factors of this retreat in tropical zone. Locally events such as the Tsunami S can carry whole portions of littorals.

In France

In 2006, IFEN estimates that 25% of the feature of coast move back whereas only 10% fatten, and this in spite of the fortifications against the erosion of the beaches and benches of rollers. 25,9% of the eroded coasts are residential areas or commercial or artificialized, 9,7% are plowed grounds and 17,4% are beaches and dunes (IFEN, Seven 2006).

These proportions have been stable for 20 years on all the metropolitan littoral. Part of the grounds bought by the Conservatory of the littoral and spaces Lacustre S because of their financial assets is degraded.

The Normandy knows important a erosion of its littoral which is mainly related to the Anthropisation. Approximately 60% of the beaches of the area tend to move back. The most active erosion relates to the littoral ranging between the Baie of the Mount Saint-Michel and the Cape of La Hague, in the west of the department of the Manche: the retreat can go up to five meters per annum on average
