Ernest Flammarion
Ernest Flammarion , (1846-1936), is the second wire of a family of four children of the Haute-Marne whose oldest son, Camille is famous a astronomer.
Ernest owes its celebrity at the publisher which it founds in 1876. The success of this company is due to the popular success of popular Astronomy, delivers of his/her brother whom it publishes in 1878 and which becomes a best-seller in this end of the XIXe century.
Thereafter, the editions Flammarion are directed towards the literature by publishing a great diversity of classic authors, modern (Zola, Maupassant, Jules Renard) or more popular like Hector Malot, then the catalog diversified and covers practically all the sectors of the edition with a predilection for the publications of scientific popularization and social sciences.
The house remained family, directed by the son of Ernest, Charles, then his grandson, Henri who taken orders in 1967. The last of the descendants of the family, Charles-Henri Flammarion, directed the company of 1985 to 2000, date on which it passed under the control of the Italian group RCS.
