Erkelenz

Erkelenz is a town of Germany located in district Heinsberg in the Land of Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia. Erkelenz is between Mönchengladbach and Aachen.

History

The first writing where Erkelenz is mentioned is a deed of gift of January 17th, 966 of the Empereur Otton the Large one. In 1326 the Count Reinald II of Geldern granted the privilege of city Erkelenz. Erkelenz belonged to the department of the Roer at the time of the French occupation between 1798 and 1815. In 1944, the city was destroyed by bombardments; its rebuilding lasted ten years.
