Erich Maria Notices

Erich Maria Notices , of her true name Erich Paul Remark (June 22nd 1898 with Osnabrück - September 25th 1970 with Locarno, Suisse) is a German writer .

Its book With the West, nothing again ( Im Westen nichts Neues ), pacifist, realistic novel and upsetting on the First World War, knew, as of its publication in 1928, a world success resounding and remains one of the most remarkable works on the monstrosity of the war. This book was " delivered to the feu" at the time of the Auto-da-fe S Nazis as of 1933. Notice exiled themselves with the the United States and obtained its naturalization in 1947 there.

The Nazi S made run the rumor that it was called " Erich Maria Kramer" , that it was Jewish and had not taken share with the First World War.

Youth

Erich Paul Remark was born on June 22nd, 1898 in Osnabrück, his/her father is the Relieur Peter Franz Remark and his mother Anna Maria Remark (born Stallknecht). He is made call Erich Maria Remarque as of 1924, the change of first name, " Maria" , going back to November 1922.

At the end of the Volksschule (one would say today in France the obligatory school) (1904 - 1912) he attends the catholic seminar of training of the Masters. After having passed its examinations in the urgency, it is built-in the army in 1916 and is sent on the Front the west in June 1917, where it is wounded as of at the end of July by glares of grenade, with the neck and the members. This career is completed on November 20th, 1920. Its first novel of youth, the hut of dream (Die Traumbude) is a failure. It is tested then with various uses with Osnabrück as accountant, salesman of tomb stones, piano teacher, organist.

Journalist

He becomes journalist with the Osnabrücker Tages-Zeitung , the Echo- Continental (Newspaper of the company of the same name), Hanover (1922) and Sport im Bild , Berlin (1924). He uses his pen name as of 1921. In Hanover, it publishes various papers under this signature in newspapers and weekly magazines. October 14th 1925, it marries Ilse Jutta “Jeanne” Zambona (born on August 15th, 1901 with Hildesheim). The following year, it buys the title of “Baron de Buchenwald” for 500 Reichsmarks with noble ruined, Hugo von Buchenwald, who adopts it in order to transmit the title to him. This year, it petitions against the prohibition of the film In the West, nothing again and it buys the house “Put Assembles Tabor” to Oporto Ronco in Suisse.

Exile

In 1933, after some legal contentions orchestrated by the Nazis in 1932, Remarque leaves Germany. It offers asylum to Oporto Ronco with those which flee the Nazi Germany, like Hans Sochaczewer. In May, one finds in his property the corpse of the Jewish journalist Felix Manuel Mendelssohn, one suspects the Nazis of this assassination. With Berlin, the books of Remark are burned in public place. It starts to write to Three comrades in 1934, the following year an envoy of Hermann Göring visits him to Oporto Ronco to convince it to return to Germany, which it refuses
