Equip with France to the Championships of the world of athletics 2007
The French selection for the Championships of the world of athletics 2007, with Osaka (Japan), was made up of 54 athletes (28 women and 26 men).
29 of the 54 selected (that is to say 53%) also formed part of the operation “Destination Athlé 2012” and thus had less than 25 years.
For the French federation of athletics, the selection for these championships fell under the prospect for two other major events:
- the Olympic Games 2008 with Beijing;
- the Championships of the world of athletics 2009 with Berlin.
The selection for Osaka was determined by the F according to four criteria:
- athletes having carried out the federal minima (23 athletes);
- powerful athletes at the time of the Championships of France with Niort and having carried out a performance locating them in 20 the better world ones (to three per country) or having carried out the minima has IAAF (12 athletes);
- athletes selected with the title of the operation “Destination Athlé 2012” (8 athletes, 6 individual + 2 collectives 4 X 100 m men);
- athletes selected in the collectives of relay (11 athletes)
According to the daily newspaper the Team (of the Tuesday, August 14, 2007), two selected athletes had a potential of world champion (“ potential gold ”), Yohann Diniz and Mehdi Baala - and eight others a chance to go up on the podium (Teresa Nzola Meso Ba, Muriel Hurtis-Houairi, Romain Mesnil, Ladji Doucouré, Eunice Barber, Christine Arron, Bouabdellah Tahri and the 4 X 100 m male). The other possible finalists were ten: the relays 4 X 100 m female and 4 X.400 m male, Vanessa Boslak, Romain Barred, Naman Keïta, David Alerte, Manuela Montebrun, Sophie Duarte, Julien Kapek and Leslie Djhone.
But after seven days of competitions, France had not gained the least medal yet - whereas 36 nations had already gained at least one of them: the hopes rested then on Leslie Djhone 5th and Romain Mesnil qualified for their finale as on Yohann Diniz on 50 km goes - it is finally the latter which gained the first French medal, silver, the last but one day of the competitions, followed by a second medal of money, that of Romain Mesnil to the pole the afternoon of the same day.
Who more is, the relay 4 X 100 m male, world champion in title, declared fixed price and the three other relays (4 X 100 m female, 4 X.400 m male and 4 X.400 m female) were not qualified for the final (the four “collectives French relay” all were thus eliminated in series for the first time from the history from the championships from the world, i.e. since 1983).
The radio operator newspaper of France Culture (which seldom evokes the sport) underlined Sunday, September 2, 2007, the total failure of forwarding, its plethoric character and the disappointing character of the results, more especially as the general level of the competition was rather low. The complete absence of the relays was put forward like a symptom of faintness. The assessment summarizes with these two only medals, out of money, the 2nd less good assessment since the beginning of the championships of the world, obscured later on by the business of doping to the Testostérone of Naman Keïta (only announced case).
However, for better acclimatizing itself, the team of France had left in final preparation to the Japan. Before joining Osaka for the competitions, it had remained (over one spread out period of the Monday the 11th, for the very first, at the Tuesday, August 21, 2007, for the last) with the hotel Hayashi Garden of the balneal city of Wakayama, near Kimiidera Stadium.
