Enlightenment , also called E , is a Gestionnaire of windows and a Environnement of office for the display system X Window.

It is a Free software distributed under a license of the type BSD.

It is distinguished from the traditional and popular environments GNOME and KDE while being entirely skeletal, scriptable and with a very thorough modularity.

Enlightenment was conceived to be spreadable on systems with large constraints of resources as on the more powerful systems.

The project advances nevertheless relatively slowly, the stable versions are not very frequent and do not bring the batches of innovations that the other popular environments propose. The current version of Enlightenment is 0.16.7. The next version, E17, are in preparation since many years. The principal originator, Rasterman, aim at transforming Enlightenment of Gestionnaire of windows ( Window Manager ) to Desktop Shell . The development was several times delayed because of many final improvements made with the organization of the sources, and Rasterman has several basic times worked over again in roof the system.

E17 is based on a play of libraries called “EFL” for “Enlightenment Foundation Libraries”

DR16

Version 0.16 (called DR16) is the stable branch of Enlightenment. It is old but it is always maintained while waiting for the release of version 0.17.

Among the functionalities, one distinguishes:

virtual offices - Enlightenment enables you to have a grid of workspace called virtual offices. The change of office is done by moving the cursor of the mouse on the edge of the screen, for which the office slips to reveal the next one. The maximum size of the grid is currently 8 out of 8, and you have 32 of them (each one with a bottom of different screen), which makes a total of 2048 spaces of possible offices. (The users can activate a chart of the offices, if they are lost, that is called a pager.)
the bar of slip of the office - that makes it possible an office to be slipped in order to reveal the office “below”. The team of E uses the analogy of the sheets of paper, piled up the ones with the top of the others, where you can make slip a sheet partially to reveal what is below.
Grouping of the windows - the possibility of putting windows in groups in such manner that they all can be moved, redimensionnées, closed, etc units.
Iconification of the windows in a " boîte" . This iconbox can be placed anywhere on the screen, because is regarded as a window.
Possibility of changing the edges of the windows , or of completely withdrawing the edges and the title bars. Enlightenment is indeed famous for its capacities to obtain a mode of very purified fenestration.
Possibility of creating short cuts keyboard for the actions such as maximizing windows, launching programs, to move between the offices and to move the cursor of the mouse - that making thus possible the use of Enlightenment with only one keyboard. e16keyedit is a graphic program making it possible to simplify the creation of short cuts keyboard.

Some of these functionalities became current in the graphic environments current, but they were enough revolutionists at the exit of Enlightenment 0.16.

One of the goals of the manager of windows is to be as configurable as possible, and for this reason, it includes/understands windows of dialogs of personalization easy to use for the configuration of x-ray, of the movement of the windows, redimensioning, the grouping, the placement, the audio, the offices multiple, the bottom of screen, the pager, the easy way and the autoraise . It also contains a window of dialogs of special effects, including/understanding an effect of ripple office.

DR17

Version 0.17 (DR17) has been under development for several years. However certain key functionalities are already implemented:

entirely personnalisable via topics;
grid of virtual office;
modular: the external modules are given the responsability dynamically to manage the Barre of the tasks, the shades of the windows, the clock… ;
of the shelves (shelves) to organize the modules on the screen;
the funds of screen, the elements of the menus and the gadgets can be animated and interactive;
shortened keyboard personalisables;
support for internationalization;
possibility of having several independent offices by screen.
