Emile Eddé

Emile Eddé (1883 - 1949) (rear RTL إميلأده) is a politician Maronite Lebanon board.

He is Prime Minister of Lebanon from October 11th, 1929 to March 25th, 1930. He becomes president of the Lebanese Republic thereafter before the independence of the country from January 20th, 1936 to April 4th, 1941.

Born on May 5th, 1883, Emile Eddé makes his studies among Jesuits, and then his right to Aix-en-Provence. Returned in Beirut he becomes the lawyer of the principal foreign companies in Syria and of France in Beirut Consulted. It takes part of the movements asking the independence of Lebanon. In 1914, with the entry in war of the Ottoman Empire, its relationships to France and its political activities failed to lead it to the bracket, but it succeeded in escaping in Egypt where it took part of the creation of has Légion of the East, unit of the French Army made up of Libanais volunteers and Syrians.

At the end of the First World War Emile Eddé took part of the Lebanese delegations in the Conference of Peace in Versailles and which allowed the creation of the State Libanais. It is named President of the Council October 11th, 1929 at March 25th, 1930 and is elected president of the Lebanese republic before the independence of the country from January 20th, 1936 to April 4th, 1941.

In 1936 Emile Eddé negotiated and signed with France the free-Lebanese treaty by which Lebanon would become an independent state. The entry in war of France in 1939, and the defeat of 1940, the agreement was suspended and Emile Eddé resigned vis-a-vis the policy of the Vichy government in April 1941.

He was also appointed president of the Republic by the French authorities during the political crisis related to the independence of Lebanon, for the 11 days short duration, i.e. from November 11th to 22nd 1943, but its authority during this period is not recognized officially. Its decision to support France was based on the fact that he considered that the English policy would be to increase the Arab influence in Lebanon with the detriment of the independence of its country.
