Embargo

A embargo (of the Spanish “of embargar” which means to embarrass) is a term which can be employed to indicate two situations:

  • the defense made with the trading vessels which are in a port and which try to leave there.
  • Administrative measure or soldier aiming at preventing freedom of movement of goods, an object.

The embargo for a state means shortage. It is a coercive measure often using diplomatic, legal and military means.

An example emblematic is that of the Americans done to the Cubans.

In journalism, an embargo indicates prohibition to disseminate information known before a date fixed by the source.

Embargo on the sale of armament

The embargo on the sale of weapons against the Popular republic of China was decided by all the members of the European Economic community after the prodemocratic Répression of the movement, at the time of the Manifestations of the place Tian' anmen in 1989. This embargo prohibited in theory the sale of any weapon, as as all that could serve to oppress the Chinese people.

In spite of the fact that the Chinese government always condemns any discussion being able to relate to this subject, several countries of the European Union, whose France and Germany, want to remove this embargo, in the name of the standardization of the relations, in order to improve the commercial exchanges.
