Elliðaá

The river

The river Elliðaá is located at the south-west of the Iceland.

Two small rivers prennet their source in the volcanic mountains of Bláfjöll. These two rivers flow in a lake: the lake Elliðavatn. It is of this lake that is born the Elliðaá river.

The Saumon coming from this river is very famous but also very expensive. Very famous people supply themselves out of salmon of this river (the Prince Charles and Eric Clapton, for example).

The valley

The valley Elliðaárdalur is a place agréble where one developed tourism besides (cycle tracks, small station of ski, swimming pool, excursions with horse).

Since the beginning of the 20th century, one retimbers this area. This zone shelters a rich fauna, with in particular 60 different species of birds.

In 1921, a hydroelectric station was built on this river. It is always in activity today. A museum located on this site tells the arrival of electricity with Reykjavík.

One finds in the valley of the lava and of large blocks of Basalte testifying to an volcanic eruption having been necessary it has: 4500 years.
