An elementary is a fantastic Créature made up of one of the Four elements of the Greek tradition: Water, Ground, Air, Fire. One can also mention certain particular creatures considered as the elementary ones by the strong bond symbolic system which they maintain with a particular element (like fire for a Phoenix). They are called also elementary spirits, elementary beings, or spirits of the elements.

One uses sometimes the “elemental” word (in the plural elemental), resulting from English.

One qualifies elementary capacity a power to control of one of the elements. It is in this use that the word " élémental" is most useful to raise ambiguity between the two directions of the elementary adjective (an elemental capacity is not inevitably a basic capacity).

It is it should be noted that Efrit is almost only regarded in the fantastic literature as elementary of fire.

In works of fiction modern

This definition can however be widened to speak about creatures made up of electricity, ice or of “pure magic”.

In the same way, one qualifies also capacity elementary (or elemental) the capacity of the X-Man Tornade (X-Men) on the weather.

The elementary ones have an particular importance in the literary universe of Michael Moorcock: as a force of nature, they represent neutrality compared to the law or with chaos.
