A electric meter is an electrotechnical body being used to measure the quantity of electrical energy consumed in a place: Dwelling, Industrie… It is used by the suppliers of electricity in order to invoice the Consommation energy with the customer. In the beginning these apparatuses were of electromechanical design , they are replaced henceforth by models completely electronic S.

The legal unit of energy is the Joule, corresponding to a power of a Watt during a second. However, the unit of energy usually used for electricity consumption is the kilowatt hour or kWh. One kWh is equivalent to 3,6×10 6   J .

Appearance of intelligent meters

The Ireland will launch from here 2012 (as of 2008 in 25.000 hearths) of the intelligent meters (known as " smart meters " (250 euros part) which will help the public to become aware in real-time of its consumption, and which will allow the accountancy of flows of current in the two directions for the hearths equipped with modules Photovoltaïque S or another electric generating station, or Bâtiment to positive energy. These meters will inform the producers in real-time and will allow more detailed invoices for the customers. Ireland also hopes to reduce to the demand for electricity in incentive the households and companies to more electric sobriety. The overcost induced by the installation of these meters is evaluated to 300 d'€ million.

Such a mixed meter electricity/gas was designed in the Netherlands in 2005 and could be used before 2013, with the same objectives of reduction in consumption, by an optimized use of electricity by the hearths.

Electric counting in France

In France, the counting of electricity belongs to the controlled field. It is one of the missions of the Conveyer of electricity and the Distributer of electricity, in accordance with the law of February 10th, 2000 (articles 15 and 19).

The residential meters are called " meters bleus". The yellow and green meters are used for the professionals and the industrialists.
