The Fort Beauséjour is located has Aulac, with the New Brunswick, close to the border with the Nova Scotia. The fort is a national historic site since 1926.
The strong one was built in an area disputed between the French and the British. In 1713, at the end of the War of succession of Spain, France yielded its colony of Acadie to the Great Britain. However, the border between British Acadie (fame the Nova Scotia) and the News-France were not clear. The two countries sought to order the disputed territory which extends around the village from Beaubassin.
With the autumn 1750, the British built Strong Lawrence (named in the honor of Charles Lawrence) on southern bank of the Missaguash river. In answer, the governor of News-France, Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel of Jonquière ordered the construction of the fortress to the shape of a star in the area. Construction began in April 1751. Work was slow and the forever completely finished fortress. Nevertheless, it was a higher construction at the height Lawrence, because of its strong earthworks. The French also built two strong satellites, Gaspareaux and Menagoueche, to reinforce their defense of the area. During four years, the Beauséjour forts and Lawrence were face one with the other at the border between the French territories and British on the Isthme of Chignectou.
The June 3rd 1755, the fort is attacked by British. After two weeks of resistance, the French forces, exceeded of number, go. ( See Battle of Strong Beauséjour .) The British have famous the fortified town then “Strong Cumberland”.
In 1776, Strong Cumberland was attacked by American forces during the Guerre of American independence. The British then pushed back the attack.
