El Fraile

The volcano El Fraile , is small a Stratovolcan currently extinguishes, which is at the border between IIIe area Chile enne of Atacama and the province Argentine of Catamarca (Département of Tinogasta). It is high of 6  068 meters (certain figures give him only 6  052 Mr.).

Situation

It is about a volcanic small apparatus which is drawn up halfway between the Nevado Incahuasi in the east (6  610 meters) and the volcano El Muerto in the west (6  497 meters), both distant of less than ten kilometers, and with 20 kilometers with the east-north-east of the Nevados Ojos del Salado (6  879 m). In south-west, near with a few five kilometers is the Nevado (6  000 m) and, further with fifteen kilometers, the Medusa (6  120 m). In the North-East, with less than twenty kilometers the San Francisco (6  draws up; 016 meters). Finally with a score of kilometers in the south-south-west, one finds the Gendarme Argentino I (5  950 Mr.) and Gendarme Argentino II (6  014 Mr.).

The volcano El Fraile belongs to the short volcanic chain of the zone of the 27 degrees of southern latitude, chains of about fifty kilometers length, directed East-West along the argentino-Chilean border and sheltering several of the highest volcanos of the ground.

In north, with a score of kilometers is the Chilean Laguna Verde, and with beyond the Falso Azufre (5  906 meters). It belongs to the volcanos close to the collar to the Paso to San Francisco. Its top of " seulement" 6  068 meters made it somewhat forget vis-a-vis the height and with the mass of its powerful neighbors.
