Edward Hawke

Sir Edward Hawke , First baron de Hawke, February 21st 1705 - October 16th 1781) was a Admiral in the British royal navy.

Born with London, it joined the Navy in 1720 but does not take part in any battle before the battle of Toulon in 1744. During the War of succession of Austria, in 1747, it is promoted Rear Admiral and captures the same year six French ships close to La Rochelle. In 1756, during the War Seven Year old, Hawke replaces John Byng, after the committal for trial of this one, with the command of the fleet of the Mediterranean and becomes Admiral.

It directed then the blockade of Brest for 6 months. The French fleet directed by Hubert de Brienne, Count de Conflans, benefits from a storm to leave the port. November 20th 1759, it directs the Bataille of the Cardinals against the Marèchal of Conflans out of bay of Quiberon. This victory, combined with that of Edward Boscawen out of bay of Lagos, then moves away any threat from French invasion. It reaches the rank of vice-admiral of the Great Britain in November 1765 then is promoted with the row of First Lord off the Admiralty (First Lord of Admiralty) in December 1766 and served until January 1771. He becomes baron in 1776.
