Edouard Herriot

Edouard Herriot (Troyes, the July 5th 1872 - Saint-Genis-Laval, the March 26th 1957) is a Politician French, member of the Radical party.

• Between with the National university, 1891

• Aggregate of letters 1893,
• Doctor honoris causa of the university of Glasgow,
• joined very young person the Radical party.
• Senator 1912 with 1919,
• Appointed of the Rhone 1919 - 1940 and of 1945 - 1957,
• mayor, of Lyon of 1905 with 1942 and of 1945 with 1957.
• Minister for Education in the Poincaré government of 1926 with 1928,
• In Alsace-Lorraine]] and to break the diplomatic relations with the Vatican, but was repudiated by Council of State on the first point and ran up against the opposition of the Senate on the second. Criticized for its laxism as regards finances, it had to resign. It then chairs it House of Commons during one year, but when Caillaux, Minister for Finance, require, to solve the financial crisis, the authorization to resort to Orders in Council, it gives up the presidency to denounce this anti-republican procedure. If the Briand cabinet is immediately reversed by such an offensive, Herriot did not expect that Gaston Doumergue Matignon offered to him immediately which it cannot refuse. Its own government does not last forty-eight hours and it must yield the place to Poincaré. Perhaps marked with these failures, it starts to approach the right-hand side little by little, without going however well far. In any case it is entitled to the flattering compliments of the abbot Bethlehem, large destroyer of the pornography, to have prohibited the posting of newspapers “dared” in the kiosks of Lyon. A certain press of left laughs then because the private life of Herriot is not completely exemplary and the connected Duck referred there in its spoonerisms, it does not start any less to gain the favor of the catholics. In 1932 it returns to the capacity after elections which marked a push towards the left; it became much more moderate and it was said that its government was the last to leave an impression of calm. However on the other side of the Rhine Hitler becomes chancellor and the “Fühmeur”, as calls it Sennep because of its love for the pipe, is not size to fight against Führer: it falls soon. In 1934, after the riots of February 6th, it enters the Doumergue cabinet to give him a guarantee of left, but this attempt at National union does not last. It remains however minister of state in the cabinets Flandrin and Laval and tries to exert a conciliating influence there, but the difficulties facing France exceed the capacities of its political personnel; in 1935, obstructed by the evolution towards the left of Radical party he resigns of his presidency and becomes again president of the Room. Herriot abstained from voting the full powerss with the Pétain marshal on July 10th, 1940. In 1942 it returned its Legion of Honor to Pétain marshal to protest against its attribution with members of LVF, which was worth to him to be assigned with residence. In August 1944, whereas the allied armies were dirigaient towards Paris, it agreed the proposal of Pierre Laval to join together the Rooms to restore the Third Republic, but the ultraones ruined this attempt while requiring of the Germans to stop it. It left in deportation. It lost some friendships by its attitude moderated during Purification but, when passions were calmed it made figure of wise and it found the Presidency of the Room in 1947. In 1953, its health being deteriorated, it could not chair the election of the president of the republic and was replaced by Andre To exchange It, which succeeded to him at the beginning of 1954 when the old mayor of Lyon decided to represent himself more. He was prize winner of international prize of peace in 1954. It was one of the founders of the Committee of the Old man Pérouges who allowed to safeguard the prestigious inheritance of this medieval city. The religious funeral of this old anticlerical, initially, is announced by Cardinal Gerlier, but Pierre Mendès France succeeds in convincing the widow of the President not to lead the funeral convoy to Primatiale St Jean. March 30th, 1957, the national funeral is retransmises by television since the Bellecour place, in the presence of the President of the Republic Rene Coty and of the President of the Council Guy Mollet. Weren't the last moments of Herriot they not, as Gerlier claimed it, harmonizes some with a whole life of secularity and agnosticism? It would be necessary to be quite informed or bold to venture something on this subject. == Anecdotes == One allots to Herriot a famous quotation on the culture: " The culture, - said an Eastern moralist, - it is what remains in the spirit when one has all oublié." Edouard Herriot, Formerly - Before the First World War (1948), p. 104. In fact, Herriot quotes an Eastern moralist. Thus in its work " In the drill normande" (Hatchet - 1925), in the chapter " Ground and the race" he writes: " The hat on the head, like Jews with the synagog, the mushrooms distill to them venin." Alain had much regard for the mayor of Lyon: " Herriot was powerful by the popular, powerful vote by the eloquence, powerful by the hope of the foules". Alain, Failure of the force (1939), Free Matter of April 25th, 1934. == external Liens == Quotations drawn from its Notes and Maxims Édouard_Herriot of: Edouard Herriot in: Edouard Herriot be: Edouard Herriot it: Edouard Herriot ja: エドゥアール ・ エリオ it: Eduardus Herriot nl: Edouard Herriot pl: Edouard Herriot Pt: Edouard Herriot [[zh: 赫里欧
