Edmond de Sélys Longchamps

The baron Edmond de Sélys Longchamps is a politician, a entomologist and a Belgian ornithologist , born the May 25th 1813 with Paris and dead the December 11th 1900 with Liege.

Belonging to the Belgian nobility , he is an active politician and will be successively appointed, senator, vice-president then president of the Belgian Senate.

He is a large specialist in the Odonate S but also in the Mammifère S and Oiseau X.

He publishes in 1831 its first article on the birds and the Insecte S of Belgium, at the 18 years age. In 1839, it makes appear an important contribution to the classification of the Passereau X. In 1842, it makes appear its Belgian Faune devoted to the Vertébré S. It publishes its Études of micromammalogy in 1839.

Selys-Longchamps is regarded as the largest specialist in the Libellule S and of the Demoiselle S. It assembles one of most important and rich collections of Névroptère S and described many species. Its collections are preserved today by the Belgian national Natural history museum. It makes a Monographie of Libellulidées d' Europe in 1840.

It makes appear 47 publications on the birds, the first appears in 1831, Sélys is then 17 years old. It gathers in its collections, more 3  000 specimens including two of extinct species: the starling of Bourbon ( Fregilupus varius ) and the Large penguin ( Alca impennis ).
