Economic cooperation for the Asia-Pacific

The Economic cooperation for the Asia-Pacific (also known in French by the English acronym APEC Economic Co-operation '') is an intergovernmental organization aiming at facilitating the economic growth, the co-operation, the exchanges and the investment of the area Asia Pacifique. It meets in forum every year.

Objectives

The APEC was established in 1989 to improve the economic growth and prosperity for the area and to reinforce the Asia-Pacific community.

Since its beginning, the APEC worked to reduce tariffs and other obstacles to the trade of commercial exchanges through the Asia-Pacific area, creating effective nation's economies and increasing exports considerably. The key of the vision of the APEC is the realization of the “Objectives of Bogor”: a zone of free trade and investments in the Asia-Pacific from here 2010 for the industrialized economies and from here 2020 for economies in the process of development. These goals were adopted by the leaders at their meeting of 1994 with Bogor, Indonesia.

The APEC also works to create a sure and effective environment for the exchange of the goods, the services and the people through borders in the area by a common policy and the economic cooperation and technique, including on the medical level, for example while encouraging in 2006 the co-operation and the preparation with possible a Pandémie of Avian flu (H5N1).

Operation

The APEC is only Intergovernmental Group in the world functioning on the basis of of nonconstraining engagements, the open dialog and equal respect for the sights of all the participants. With the difference of the European Community or other multilateral economic organizations, the APEC does not have any engagement of treaty required by its participants. The decisions taken by the APEC are obtained by the consensus and engagements are undertaken on a voluntary basis.

The APEC has 21 members, who represent more of the third of the population of the world (2,6 billion people), roughly 60% of GDP of the world and approximately 47% of the world commerce. It also represents the economic zone most dynamic in the world, having taken part in almost 70% of the total economic growth between 1994 and 2004.
