Ecological Integrity

In Canada, the ecological integrity is defined by the Commission on the integrity of the national parks of the Canada in the following way:

“It is the state of a ecosystem considered to be characteristic of the natural area of which it forms part, more precisely by the composition and the abundance of the Espèce S natives and the biological communities like by the rate/rhythm of the changes and the maintenance of the ecological processes . ”

the ecosystems are known as “ just ” when their indigenous components Abiotique S and Biotique S (Plante S, animal and others organization S) and their processes (such as the growth and the reproduction) or the course of the cycles biogeologic and natural are intact (dunes or not fixed banks, not fixed clearings and edges, etc).

This concept among Anglo-Saxons often calls that of “ecosystem in good health” , that the European directive tallies on water ( DCE ) indicates by “ecological good state” of the watery ecosystems and of the catchment area.

In French-speaking Europe, the ecological concept of integrity (or écopayagère) evokes to also it not fragmentation ecosystems, by quasi-insuperable transport infrastructures by the majority of the species, or zones " polluée" or very artificialized hostile with fauna, the flora, mushrooms, etc there is integrity ecological when all the components of the ecosystem are normally and functionally active and preserved.

Ecology of the landscape

For the Ecology of the landscape: the independent factor of “integrity” is the fact that a space is not fragmented for example by transport infrastructures or a Pollution of the medium by Insecticide S, Fongicide S or Weeding S or other factors such as the luminous Pollution for the night Environnement.

If the natural environments of a space are preserved, without being fragmented for the species which occupy it or which should naturally occupy it, it is said that there is integrity écopaysagère .

This applies to the diurnal environment, but also to the night Environnement, less known, which can be for example disturbed by the “ luminous pollution” .

Laws and regulations

habitat S or networks of natural habitats can be legally protected in certain countries.

Europe tries to set up a ecological paneuropéen , within the framework of a Stratégie paneuropéenne of protection of biological diversity and landscape network .

In the United States a similar project of Pan-American ecological network is confronted with the interests of the Panama Canal which separated the two sub-continents and which is the object in years 2005-2010 of a project of widening.

The landscape and/or ecological integrity can theoretically and to some extent being restored by measurements of “ mitigation ” ( renaturation ), possibly within the framework of imposed administrative measures of type compensatory measures or conservative measures which after Cartographie of the biological corridors imposes constructions of écoduc S, generally within the framework of impact studies, with public surveys.
Ces measurements is still very rare and specific, with often less than 3 to 10 projects of écoduc by large European countries rich person for example (for the years 1990-2005), generally on or with the lower part of highways, and initially aiming more circulation of game that of all fauna and the flora and the associated species.
