Dumuzi
Dumuzi in Sumérien, or Babylonian Tammuz in , is a God Mésopotamie N. He is god-Pasteur. Besides a mythological account opposes it to Enkimdu, god of the farmers, to which it disputes the favors of the goddess Inanna, who ends up choosing it. That takes again the conflicts between farmers and pastors.
In another legend, the Descent of Inanna to the Hells , it is chosen by its parèdre to replace it with the Enfers. He thus died, and is then regarded as an infernal divinity. He is however made replace a half of the year by his sister Geshtinanna. The topic of died of Dumuzi gave rise to texts of lamentation.
The return of Dumuzi on ground is seen like the beginning of the revival of nature. That is in particular marked in ritual the mésopotamiens by the crowned Marriage (Hiérogamie), in which the kings sumériens interpreting Dumuzi linked themselves ritually with the Inanna goddess, to mark the return of spring.
Under another of its aspects, which one finds in particular in the Mythe of Adapa , Dumuzi is one of the two guards of the celestial palate of Anu, with Ningishzida.
Dumuzi is venerated in various temples. One finds it with Bad-Tibira, of which he is regarded as a former sovereign (ante-déluvien) by the royal Liste sumérienne. It has its sanctuary in that of its parèdre Inanna with Uruk.
Dumuzi had given its name to the sixth month of the year with Lagash under the antiquated Dynasties. The calendar mésopotamien of the posterior times includes/understands one month named Dumuzi/Tammuz, the fourth. Tammuz is still today the name of the month corresponding to July in Iraq.
The name of Tammuz appears in the Bible, in the Livre of Ézéchiel (8: 14).
