Douglas Hyde

Douglas Hyde (January 17th 1860 - July 12th 1949) is an Irish politician, first president of Ireland from June 25th, 1938 to June 24th, 1945.

Wire of Pasteur, Douglas Hyde was born in the county from Roscommon. It makes its studies with the Trinity College of Dublin, and is impassioned for the Irish Gaélique and traditional folklore.

It publishes initially poems under the pseudonym of An Craoibhín Aoibhinn (the small branch jokes), then the tales which it collected at the time of its meetings with the Irish peasants: Leabhar Sgéuluigheachta (the book of Tales, 1889).

Very productive, it will connect plays, books of tales and other publications poetic.

In 1893, it founds, with Eoin MacNeill and the father O' Growney, the Ligue Gaelic, of which there will remain the president until in 1915.

In 1909, he off becomes the first modern Irish professor to the University College Dublin.

Douglas Hyde is president of the League Gaelic in 1893.

He is senator of the free State of Ireland in 1925.

Ireland makes its first president of it, function which he exerts of 1938 with 1945. Its election is acquired unanimously.
