Dorestad
Dorestad was the name of one of the most important ports of the Europe Médiévale.
Dorestad was located on one of the arms of the mouth of the the Rhine, on the vestige of a former strong Roman, with the current Netherlands, close to the town of Wijk bij Duurstede. Between 600 and 850, the port often was the subject of war between the Frisons and the Francs. Within the Carolingian Empire, Dorestad is a personal possession of Charlemagne, like Quentovic in France. These two cities managed the essence of the sea traffic of the Carolingians.
Because of the importance of its center of trade, Dorestad draws the attention of the Viking S. It is plundered in 834, 835, 844, 857 and 873. The historians estimate that approximately 7000 Vikings took share with the first raid in 834. The city became the capital of the kingdom Viking of Dorestad, between 850 and 885.
Work on the the Rhine filled the port after 863 and the city declines quickly.
