The dolphin (of the old Greek
δελφίς
/ delphís , “spirit of the sea”, perhaps derived from
δελφὐς
/ delphús , “Utérus”) is a river Marine mammal and pertaining to the order of the Cétacé S.
The dolphin indicates in French the Cetacea with teeth (Odontocète S) of less than five meters generally equipped with a long Rostre:
- the species most common and familiar of dolphins, which one finds in majority in the Delphinarium S, is the Grand dolphin (tursiops truncatus).
- Of many species of the family of the Delphinidé S which includes also the Orque S.
- Delphinoïdes and the dolphins of fresh water alive in the Fleuve S of Asia or of South America of which under the family of the platanistoïdes.
Other marine animals are sometimes called incorrectly “dolphins” like Cetacea with the short or hardly existing rostre such as the Narval and the white whale, two animals larger than the traditional dolphins, as well as the Marsouin S which are them much smaller.
One often lends to the dolphin a social character, but certain species are solitary. These animals are popular because certain of these species let themselves approach by the man and are affectionate. Certain dolphins are known to have saved men.
