Dolly
The dolly is a displacement of the camera during the Prise sights. The objective of a dolly is either to follow a subject moving, or to approach some or to move away some.
History
It is the operator Alexandre Promio who had the idea of the first dolly of the history of the cinema while placing his camera on a gondole with Venice in 1896.
Description
The types of the most widespread dollies are the dolly side, the dolly before or back, the high or low dolly or the circular dolly.
The effect of dolly can be obtained by moving the camera manually (camera on the shoulder or use of a Steadicam), while assembling it on a carriage which circulates on rails (the carriage is called dolly ), by embarking it in a vehicle or by fixing it on a crane or a Louma.
Although the dolly is sometimes confused with the Zoom, these two techniques being able to lead to results which seem close if the prospect is weak - the enlargement or contracting of the subject - they are of completely distinct nature. Indeed, the modification of the framework in the dolly rises from the physical displacement of the camera whereas in the case of the zoom, also called zoom shots, it acts of a modification length of the focal distance. The great difference is the modification of the prospect for to the zoom shots and the variation for Depth of field. It is nevertheless possible to combine these effects to obtain a Travelling compensated for.
The dolly can moreover be combined with other movements of camera (ex: Panoramic Movement of crane or ) to constitute in a more general way a Sequence shot.
One can as dézoomer at the same time as one advances the camera towards, for example, a subject. One calls that a Travelling compensated for. That gives a surprising effect; the subject does not change a plan scale whereas the bottom is seen widened.
