Doña Paz

The Doña Paz was a ferry which ran after a collision with the Pétrolier Vector the December 21st 1987.

The ship was on the way since Tacloban with the Filipino towards Manila when, whereas it was in the strait of Counted, it enters in collision with the Vector , refined tanker transporting 8800 barrels of petrol.

Oil ignited and caused a fire which extended quickly on the Doña Paz . Of the 13 team members of the Vector , only 2 survived. 58 team members of the ferry perished. Doña Paz ran in a few minutes without no Life raft being able to be launched. 21 or 24 people only survived in the blazing inferno, but 1565 victims perished officially; other reports/ratios affirm that the ferry was overloaded and that the real number of victims exceeds 4000. 1568 people were recorded, which makes of it the greatest maritime catastrophe of ferry; if the number of 4375 victims is veracious, it is then also the greatest maritime catastrophe in times of peace.

A later investigation revealed that the crew of the Vector was not qualified enough and that the license of the ship had expired.
