Dniepr

The River Dniepr (Russian French name retained) but which is also called Belorusse Dniapro in and Ukrainian Dnipro in is a navigable water way of Eastern Europe.

Characteristics

2.290 km length, it has its source in Russia, crossing the Bielorussia and the Ukraine and throwing in the Black Sea. It passes in particular to Smolensk, Kiev and Dnipropetrovsk. Two tragically known affluents are the Bérézina and the river Pripiat on which is located the Nuclear plant of Tchernobyl which rejected Radioisotope S in the water of the river. It is connected to the river Bug via a channel.

Its course fast and is embarrassed by blocks of granite and chalk benches which give rise to several cataracts. Dniepr has at the 19th century only one bridge, that of Kiev; still it is removed the winter. Its water is judged at the same time by the Dictionnaire Bouillet very full of fish.

Cultural aspect

Its importance was stressed by all the Ukrainian patriots in the forefront of which Tarass Chevtchenko and by the famous poem the Will which evokes Dnipro.

  • not to be confused with the Dniestr (1232 km) which is a river which runs in the West of the Ukraine and is also thrown in the Black Sea.

  • Julian Scriabine, wire of the type-setter Alexandre Scriabine mourrut drowned in the Dniepr, the year of its 11 years, four years after the death of his/her father.
  • Dniepr is also a mark of Motocyclette S.
