District of Kuçovë

The district of Kuçovë (Albanian Rrethi I Kuçovës ) is one of the 36 districts of Albania. Its population is of 38.000 inhabitants and his surface of 112 km ². It is located at the center of the country and its capital is Kuçovë.

Kuçovë is the center of Albanian oil industry, it was built with the Soviet assistance in the Fifties and raises an interest for the students of communist architecture, although most of the infrastructures dates from the communist period and was installed by the Italians for the period of Zogist. Today very few the oil wells function, and in some places this one infiltrates on surface.

The city suffered much for the period post-Communist and there are now many factories and power stations given up in and around the city. Then it is obviously poorer than the close cities such as Berat. Kuçovë was before a closed military zone and air base was one of largest in Albania, of the flights of MiG fighters of the Fifties often flew over the sky until 2005.
