Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft
Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft is a company of edition of discs of Classical music which belongs to the Universal Music Group.
The company Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft is created in December 1898 with Hanover by Emile Berliner (the inventor of the grammophone) and his Joseph brother. At the beginning of the 20th century, the company produces several million discs each year. Among the artists who make the success of the company then, one can quote Enrico Caruso, Feodor Chaliapin and Nellie Melba.
In 1941, Deutsche Grammophon is repurchased by the group of electronics Siemens & Halske. In 1962, Siemens and the group Dutch Philips join and gather all their musical activities in the group DGG/PPI which will give rise to PolyGram in 1971. Philips becomes the majority shareholder of the PolyGram group following the disengagement of Siemens in 1987.
In 1998, the Canadian group Seagram Company Ltd. repurchases PolyGram and creates the Universal Music Group.
