History of the city

At the time mérovingienne, a fort and some houses were installed on the slopes of the Mount-Toulon.

At the 10th century, Privas was the property of the counts of Toulouse but they yielded this stronghold to the lord of Poitiers, count de Valentinois.

At the 11th century, the lord of Deprived made build ramparts which surrounded the fort - with the current site of the college - and a feudal village composed of two districts: Bize and Clastre.

At the 13th century, the city strongly developed and the inhabitants were installed on the plate in the east in two new districts: Claux and Mazel. Aymar of Poitiers, in 1281 and its son in 1309, granted a Charte of stamping to Privas, guaranteeing economic rights, tax and soldiers at the city.

At the 16th century, the Reform which was a religious movement protesting, was established deeply and quickly in Privas. At the beginning, the movement was popular and a great number of people of the nobility and upper middle classes vivaroise adhered quickly to these ideas. Deprived played a leading role during the wars of religion, became an important center protesting and a symbol of resistance to monarchy. That was worth to him the title of “Rampart of the Reform”.

A very hard repression was organized. Many inhabitants were exterminated, certain fled with Geneva. Cepndant, in spite of repression, the movement extended and during nearly 70 years, the catholic worship was not celebrated any more in Privas, the church was even destroyed in 1570. Pasteur come from Suisse organized the reformed Church of Deprived. One spoke then about the city like Geneva of the country. The garrison of the king is refused by the city. There is no Massacre of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in Privas. Quite to the contrary, as soon as the news of the massacres comes from to Privas, this one is drawn up.

In 1566, the baronnie of Deprived was divided between the two girls of Diane of Poitiers, baroness of Chalencon and of Deprived. It is the elder one which obtained the seigniory of Deprived. This baronnie was then sold with Jacques de Chambaud, chief Protestant who became thus the first lord huguenot of Deprived.

In 1629, the city, following the catch of weapons of the Protestants, is besieged by the royal army. Defended by Montbrun with 800 men, it is taken and shaven.
