Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode (DM) is a British group New wave originating in Basildon and formed in 1980. Major group of the Anglo-Saxon scene and leader of the current new wave , it is one of the rare formations of the Années 1980 resulting from the the United Kingdom to being parvenu “to survive” this decade all while maintaining a success international relatively constant, becoming thus a pillar impossible to circumvent of the electro-pop. Its name - chosen with haste at a few minutes of the beginning of the one their first concerts - comes from a French female magazine.
Stevo Pearce, manager of the group Software Concealment and founder of the label Odd Somme Records , the reference mark and leaves the title Photographic on a compilation entitled Odd Some Album (1981) where they côtoient other future group-headlights of the years 1980 such as The and Soft Concealment. Daniel Miller the fact then of signing on its label Transfers Records in 1981. The group always remained faithful to this label until now.
Depeche Mode will be its first great success with the the United States in 1984 with individual the People Are People .
The growing success of their Synthpop with the style very impresses industrial music reached its paroxysm in 1990 with the album Violator including the titles Personal Jesus , Policy Of Truth and especially Enjoy The Silence . The Années 1990 are marked by the addiction with the Drogue, the Overdose and the attempt at Suicide of Dave Gahan, which will be detoxicated only in 1996, but also by the departure of Alan Wilder in 1995. But their creativity always shows through in the albums which follow ( Ultra in 1997, Exciter in 2001 and Playing The Angel in 2005).
The near total of the songs is composed by Martin L. Gore (primarily in " mode; mineur"), except those of the first album ( Speak and Spell ) which was mainly the work of Vince Clarke, quickly party to found Yazoo then its current group, Erasure. Since 2005, Dave Gahan takes part in the writing of the pieces.
Depeche Mode succeeds in the feat of ingenuity to bring back towards him of public extremely varied, mixing with the often accrocheuses melodies and the simple but touching words, with an electronic music whose approach remains resolutely " rock" , Martin Gore having made much so that one does not regard DM solely as one " group; of synthés" while bringing its original design of the guitar, based on simple fronts and very worked sounds.

- Alan Wilder (Synthetizer, battery) of 1982 to 1995. Engaged after the departure of Vince Clarke to ensure the lives ones, it will be invested in the group rather quickly where its creative contribution and its talents of musician will prove to be determining. History
Genesis
It is in Basildon in 1977 in England (Essex), that Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher decides to create a group per hour when the United Kingdom resounds with the sound of the punk one.
They are joined as of 1978 by a friend of college, Martin L. Gore and found “Composition off sound”. The group finds in Dave Gahan, located at the time of a casting whereas neither Gore nor Clarke are seen as principal singer, a voice which the trio sought. This last is besides at the origin of the new name of the group inspired by a French review: “Depeche Mode”. English eager to include/understand the significance of it has fun to translate their name by " literally; Fast Fashion" or even " Hurry up fashion" …
This name was to some extent " improvisé" by Dave Gahan, before their first concert. On the telephone with the organizer, this last asks for the name of their group to him. Dave is taken of short. In front of him, on a table, a specimen of the magazine " rests; Dispatch Mode" …
Their first compositions are seen refused recording companies which hardly appreciate the overload of synthetizers used (instruments of predilection of the group at its beginnings).
Just Can' T Get Enough
It is at the time of a concert in a Londonien club that Daniel Miller reference mark the group and decides to sign it under its new label: Transfers Records. In 1981 leaves their first individual Dreaming Of Me followed New Life and finally the planetary hit Just Can' T Get Enough . These first titles will be extracted from the album Speak and Spell whose compositions are mainly of Vince Clarke (Martin L. Gore is there the author only of two songs). The synthetizers hold to with it a place privileged on bottom of boxes with rate/rhythm. But at once acquired success, Vince Clarke leaves the group and leaves to found the groups Yazoo with Alison Moyet (a girlfriend of the college of Basildon), then The Assembly, and finally the duet Erasure which leaves the albums always regularly.
Depeche Mode becomes a trio without lyric writer then, and its future appears compromised well. The trio decides nevertheless to continue the adventure: Martin L. Gore will be from now on author/type-setter of the group which recruits Alan Wilder in 1982 on classified published in the Melody Maker . This one requires a man of less than 21 years and a true musician… This last, which will have to cheat on its age, is a musician endowed experimentalist, excel pianist, and its contribution will appear determining (Gahan does not compose yet at the time and Fletcher which is not a musician except par, deals primarily with management; certain journalists wonder still today about its real function within DM). Wilder is before any volunteer to ensure the lives ones, this is why it does not take part in the development of has Broken Frame (1982). The artistic contribution of Alan Wilder will be made feel in the album Construction Time Again (1983) where it signs two titles completely ( The landscape is changing and Two minutes warning ). In this third opus of the group their nourished first samples industrial Musique appears German and their sounds become more worked. As for their words, they take more political turnings: Get the balances right and Everything Counts exposes the drifts of the Capitalisme.
Music for the Masses
While pop synthetic gains to them in blackness, success grows… ; the trouble, the religion and the sex become the topics of predilection of the compositions of Martin L. Gore. The albums Nap Great Reward (1984) and Black Celebration (1986) confirm their taste for the German industrial music (in particular Kraftwerk) which nourishes their samples inventive: heavy and metal noises, cold percussions hammer titles (and tubes) like Master and Serving , Blasphemous rumors or Stripped ; but it is the 45 turns People are People (extracted from Some Great Reward ) and its melody imparable which enables them to be world success (in particular with the the United States) in 1984/85. It is on this occasion that Depeche Mode will leave a mini album entitled People Are People only résevé to the USA for better making known their musical genesis with individual same title, and also Get The Balance Right! and Everything Counts inter alia. This success is reinforced by the world publication end 1985 of their true first compilation gathering the individual published since their beginning. The following year, the album Black Celebration assoit their reputation with the the United Kingdom and gives them the statute of worship group on the other side of the Atlantic, where they are taxed with formation underground whereas they are perceived as very commercial in Europe (their individual is published in a multitude of remixes to increase their sales). However, the electronic and experimental approach of the group makes it possible to develop, in an intelligent way, many variations on their titles. They collaborate with many producing arrangers/and DJ and offer to their fans a multidude of sound reflections, thus widening, the emotional spectrum of each one of their tubes. Denouncing capitalism, they have a social and popular approach. The members of the group signed their contract of a simple handshake. Very hard-working and profitable! It is there, their least paradox…
Prolific, DM leaves a disc per annum and their popularity thus increases in an impressive way, the group then trying to free itself from this image of hairdresser's assistants with synthés which sticks to them with the skin. It is in particular for this reason that they solicit the Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn to refashion their image, so that it becomes more in adequacy with their music. From there, its intervention on the clips and the photographs of the group becomes determining for imaginary visual group, formalizing emblems like the pink on Violator, or more recently an angel on the small pockets of the albums.
1987 mark a stage moreover in their maturity. The single album of the group recorded in France with the Guillaume Tell studios (with Puteaux) is concretized under the crook of David Bascombe, Daniel Miller and Gareth Jones preferring to eclipse. The new approach of work of the group gives rise to Music for the Masses , which opens on Never Let Me Down again , a synthetic rock'n'roll transfering with the black onirism, being completed on Wagnerian choruses and which will become with time the essential Hymne in the concerts of Depeche Mode throughout the world. It gives the tone of a disc even more succeeded than the others. Its international success authorizes impressive turned which passes by the the United States and which the American scenario writer D.A. Pennebaker will choose immortaliser: it is about live the 101 filmed at the stage Pink Bowl with Los Angeles whereas DM occurs in front of more than 70.000 spectators. Great successes of the group there are found: People are People , Never Let Me Down Again , Master and Serving , Everything Counts , Behind the wheel , Shake the Disease . The film carried out carries the title Depeche Mode 101 in reference to the 101 concerts given during this round. This documentary follows in parallel a group of fans transported through the USA in a bus provided by the production, as well as the group during these same displacements, interview, and obviously at the time of its concerts.
Violator: the apotheosis
DM knows one thus dazing success, and it group is then about to reach its apotheosis, as well artistic as commercial.
The four musicians return in studio to Milan to record a new album whose models of Martin L. Gore are very purified. They call upon the producer Flood and record Violator where one finds the titles Personal Jesus , Policy Of Truth , World In My Eyes , Halo and especially the song which will remain most famous (with Just Can' T Get Enough ) and their larger tube to date: Enjoy the silence , trotts techno pop melancholic person raised by powerful celestial synthetic voices and being completed on triumphing coppers (as much synthetic), become a Hymne imparable.
Initially composed as a ballade (the demonstration minimalist of Martin Gore was made up on a Harmonium), Flood and Alan Wilder immediately detected a strong potential there: they then asked Gore to compose an additional melody old story with the guitar (which will be declined with different octaves and will be also played keyboards), the rate/rhythm was accelerated and a very particular care was taken to the production of the song (for proof, the title is the only one which was mixed by Daniel Miller and Flood and not by the French DJ François Kevorkian which mixed the remainder of the album).
As for the first extract of the album appeared on the waves at the end of August 1989, " Personal Jesus" in more one strikes: with a song rock'n'roll built around a front of guitar blues (way John Lee Hooker), DM is where it was not awaited. This unexpected mixture at the heavy rate/rhythm, the simple and marked melody of a slogan - more than a refrain - (" Reach out and touch faith") give the tone. Not losing sight of the fact their field of electronic experimentation, " Personal Jesus" concluded by a hypnotic instrumental phase, where the programmings seem delivered to themselves, struck by a rate/rhythm from a beautiful heaviness.
Mute did not hope for such a passion for " Personal Jesus" , misant more on the exit of " Enjoy The silence" , envisaged strategically at the time of the exit of the album. The considerable success of Violator , album with the production of most perfect, led it since to join the Pantheon of the discs impossible to circumvent of the British musical avant-garde.
Black years
After the immense success of Violator , DM offers off Songs Faith and Devotion , its new opus which leaves in 1993. I Feel You , Walking in my shoes , Condemnation and In your room are titles even more rock'n'roll, more crudes, the whole produces again by Flood and Wilder. Chorus-singers of gospels and sections of cords intervene on an album which the group knows very waited. Although success is again with go (the disc is classified as of its exit n°1 sales in England like with the the United States), this one however is mitigated. The first extract I feel you does not go as much to the United States that on the continent of Europe, the group decides to promote the face B of theindividual one, One caress , without result. It is especially in Europe that the album will know its best sales.
Then the round " Devotional" who will last more than one year and half will prove to be strong testing: énièmes tensions within the group, excessive catches of drugs and alcohol, and to crown the whole, Fletcher, victim of a depression, is replaced for some dates. The completed round, the group is believed then arrived at the end of the adventure.
The assessment in the middle of the years 1990 is hardly amusing in spite of their enormous popularity: Gahan became true a junkie living almost with its dealers, Gore is insulated, Fletcher tries to maintain the cohesion of the group which sees one of its members leaving the adventure. Estimating that its work is not considered at its right value and is tested by the tensions which it feels within the group, Alan Wilder decides to leave it in 1995. It is devoted then to its project solo Recoil where it will be able to be more delivered to the experiments it affectionate. It is little to say that DM loses on this occasion a creative pillar determining.
The same year, Dave Gahan is hospitalized following an suicide attempt. Restored, it finds the two remaining members beginning 1996 to record a new album but it will be victim of a Overdose little time after which will oblige it to undertake a detoxification therapy.
Ultra
It will be necessary to wait the following year to see Depeche Mode reappearing with individual the Barrel Of has Gun , which announces the exit of Ultra , a very dark album and still keeping many crossbred tonalities rock'n'roll of more peaceful atmospheres. However, the success of mass is not really with go (even if the album is sold relatively well) and certain fans of the first hour regret the DM of the Années 1980, whereas others consider that it is one of their best disc. The producer Tim Simenon is with the orders and ensures continuity with obviousness; individual the Barrel off has Gun , It' S No Good , Home and Useless reveals a power of sound which constitutes the recurring claw of DM (low doors and inventive synthetic sounds).
In 1998, the group leaves a compilation The Singles 86-98 , together with an individual new ( Only when I roofing stone myself ), as well as a republication of The Singles 81-85 . The public appreciates and a mini-round is organized.
In 2001, the three British return with Exciter , and from individual like Dream One , I Feel loved , Freelove or Goodnight lovers . But the fans are rather disappointed: the album is sometimes judged too much " mou" and deprived of trademark to which the group had accustomed their public during so many years. Despite everything, the round will be triumphal and criticisms relatively positive.
An angel passes…
Then, the following year, Martin L. Gore and Dave Gahan respectively leaves their own albums solos ( Counterfeit ² and Paper monsters ) before finding in January 2005 to record Playing The Angel , for which Dave Gahan enhardi by its success solo signs its first songs for DM. This last album is quite representative of the will of the group to join again with a sound in conformity with their long epopee, as testify some the hits Precious , has Bread That I' m Used To , Suffer well and John The Revelator . By soliciting Ben Hillier with the production (which had collaborated with Blur), DM persists in forging a sound resolutely avant-gardist, draining saturated guitars and synthetizers vintage. This album anchored in modernity testifies that DM, with the image of the voice of Gahan, is well decided never not to age…
Martyr
Martyr , resulting from the falls of Playing The Angel , is new the " single" Depeche Mode group. It is exclusively available on the new compilation of the group left at the beginning of November 2006 under the title Best Of: volume 1 .
Anecdote
In the song " Figli di Pitagora" of Eiffel 65 and the remix of DJ Gabry Ponte the Depeche Mode group is often evoked at the time of the refrains.

One can notice that the cover of the 2nd album represents a woman with a sickle, and that of 3rd man with a hammer: the symbol of the Communisme is thus reconstituted, hammer and sickle. Many songs have political contents marked with left.
